By definition, “boondocking” means there’s no external source of electricity for your RV. But camping off the grid often means there’s no external source of outdoor light either. If you need light outside your RV at night, you’ll need to provide it yourself, at a time when you’re least likely to have power to spare.

We’ve been upgrading our RV’s interior lights to LEDs, but we also want plenty of exterior light available, while using as little power as possible. That means upgrading our incandescent patio and docking lights to LEDs, which are much brighter, but use only 1/4 to 1/6 the power. This video will show you how easy it is.

If you’ve seen our previous videos in this series, you know we’re big fans of M4 Products. Being a fellow RVer, Steve (M4’s owner) is incredibly knowledgeable about LED applications for RVs, and the quality of his products is obvious. We’ve looked at, and tried, our fair share of LED bulbs, and M4’s are the best quality and best value we’ve found so far.

Out of nearly 2,000 entries, a very hearty congratulations to Ginger Z. from Texas, who’s won a $250 Online Shopping Certificate to M4 Products. Ginger is the proud owner of a vintage 1983 Airstream. She purchased her trailer about a year ago and performed a complete restoration all by herself (with her husband helping with some of the heavy lifting). She did such a great job that her rig won the Silver Award at the International Airstream Rally in Gillette, WY this past June! How awesome that such a capable RVer won the contest, since DIY is what our videos are all about. Ginger is looking forward to adding M4 LEDs to her beautiful rig.

Thanks to everyone who entered. If you didn’t win, but still want some awesome new LEDs, be sure to take advantage of the Discount Code “RVgeeks5″ when checking out at M4 Products and you’ll get a 5% discount on your entire order. We hope that will be some consolation and thanks to everyone who entered!

  5. At the start of this season, I changed over about half of my interior lights to LED. Our Jayco 26′ Superlite usually goes through 2 batteries in 1 day. Now, with the LEDs, we go 2 to 2.5 days before using the generator to recharge the 2 batteries. It may take a little while, but the savings in gas from the generator will end up paying for the LEDs. We also really like the white light much better than the dingy yellow type lighting from the old bulbs.

We recently camped deep in the Adirondacks of New York State. 3.5 miles from the nearest paved road. The LED lighting were perfect, especially when the fisher cats came around. We replaced the patio light, but have not yet replaced the small 2 bulb light that illuminates the stairs. In fact, with only the patio light and step lights, we used a lot more power. It’s amazing what only 2 small non-LED bulbs use in power.

These videos have been absolutely great!! I learn a lot and I am able to accomplish the same things on my own after watching the videos.

    Thank you RV Geeks!

Hey Don & Bobbi! Great to hear from you. We just FaceTimed with Brian a couple of days ago when he was in San Fran… or maybe he was somewhere in Europe (you know how hard it is to keep track of him). lol We were just back East for our trip to Scotland and our awesome trip on Brian & Joe’s new boat. We’re flying back for the holidays this year, so we’ll be seeing them again soon. What a small world it is. We love Tucson, and we’re hoping to be down that way next winter (staying north this year). Maybe we can connect with you there, or somewhere else on the road. Glad you’re liking your LEDs, too, because we sure love ours. Hope you entered the contest! – Peter & John

      1. Hope to meet you guys soon! We are entering the contest every day! The LED’s are awesome- just had to turn the sockets a bit as they are a bit bigger. D&B

Thanks for sharing that. Even the best products can still experience an occasional problem. We always say that the true measure of a company is how they deal with those issues. It’s great to hear that M4 continues to live up to its well-earned reputation for great customer service.

We hear you Rodger! We just made a minor change to the entire website, slightly darkening the body text so that it contrasts a little more with the white background. That should make things just a bit easier on your “tired old eyes”! Speaking of which, you might want to get them checked, as the body text is gray, not blue. ;-) Hope this helps!

    2. Got our first set of warm white LEDs for the interior and cool white for the patio light. We love them, they make the inside feel so homey now. Got to save up our nickels, so we can do the rest of the interior.

  7. I watched your LED video back in April and it inspired me (as do most of your videos). I’m always looking to improve my vintage Airstream. In the interior I was able to change all the bulbs and keep my original light fixtures. With the exterior I did update with all new LED running lights and changed out the bulbs in the brake and tail lights. Love it 

That’s great to hear, Ginger! Thanks so much for letting us know that we were able to give you some ideas for upgrading your rig. We love our LEDs (as we sit here under our 3-light dining room fixture, which now adds virtually no heat to an already warm day). :)

  8. Great Video, had purchased some already from this company as you had already suggested. Very happy with them. Plan on purchasing more, unless I win, hahahaha. keep up the great videos. :)

Hi Robert. We’re currently on the road looking at the contest from our iPhone, and it seems to be working. There are 104 entries so far, so we were pretty sure it’s okay. Can you try a different browser or a different device?

Try it now Dean. Should be all fixed. Once you pin it, you’ll need to get the link from your Pinterest page and paste it into the contest box. Sorry for the problem, and thanks for entering! Please let us know if you have any more trouble with it.

  9. As usual, you guys did a great job with this video. I have watched several of your videos and have followed your instructions on a few mods. I really like your LED series! I upgraded my interior lights after watching your instructions and it’s a huge improvement. My coach is a 2013, but still didn’t have LED’s yet.. Now that I saw this video, I will be updating my docking and patio lights too! I had no idea it was so simple to remove and replace my docking lights!! Thanks guys–keep up the fantastic work!
