How To Set Up a New Sewer Hose – The Easy Way!

Okay, we get it… starting a new sewer hose isn’t rocket science. But sometimes it’s the little things that make RVing easier. Here’s a simple little trick that keeps us from struggling to get a new hose connected to the hard plastic fittings on our RV’s sewer system.

  1. Hi! Thanks for this idea. Trying to find that threaded clear elbow you show in the video. The link provided shows me a Camco 39432, which from the picture does not seem to have a threaded end. Is the amazon photo correct?

      Hi John! The reason we linked to the Camco 39432 clear elbow is because the elbow we have (which is actually this Valterra model) doesn’t work well with our favorite Camco heavy-duty sewer hose. Camco & Valterra (probably intentionally) have their threads in the opposite direction. So if you want to use that Valterra elbow… make sure you get a Valterra sewer hose to go with it. Otherwise, you’ll have the same problem we do, which is that the hose and the elbow have threading in opposite directions. 😜

      1. Thanks for your quick reply! Looking at both options, and it seems Valterra has a wide variety of hoses; EZ-Flush, EZ-Drain, etc. with various mil specs. Can you give your opinion/experience with the Valterra hose, and which one has satisfied you all the most? I am looking to build a hose with the 45 elbow as you show specifically for use at the drive-up dump station – calling for a shorted length of hose. Looking at 10′, which seems to be the minimum offered and probably OK.

          Hi John. The only hose we actually have any real experience with is the 20 foot Camco hose we link to here in this post. We’ve literally been using the same exact hose for at least a dozen years, and have been very satisfied with it. We do have one issue that’s a little unusual that has affected our decision on how to set up our hose. Our Newmar has a wonderful hose storage mechanism, which is a small door that looks like a fuel filler door right behind the water Bay. Behind that door is a long sleeve that the sewer hose slides into when not in use. It’s really clever, but does have a limiting factor in that you cannot have anything attached to the end of the hose, or it won’t fit down into the sleeve. The only thing there’s JUST enough room for is the clear sewer elbow I up at the top, which just fits behind the door when closed. Many of the Volterra hoses have some sort of hard plastic connector at the ends, which precludes us from using our storage sleeve if we went with one of those. That’s the primary reason we simply stuck with the Camco hose all of these years. As far as the dedicated hose just for using a dump station, ten feet should be plenty. Although we simply use the same 20’ all the time regardless of whether we are at a dump station or hooked up at a campsite.

  2. Do you or have you thought of any quick way to put up screen rooms or other awning room structures in a easier or faster fashion for newbies and others that might consider using these? Any and all help might make a great informative video!

      Sorry Gregory, but we’ve never owned or used any type of screen room before. The best thing we can suggest is to post your question on the iRV2 forums.   4. We’ve never used that little door and chute on our Ventana because of the terminal fittings. Do you reconnect the sewer-end connector (EZ Coupler) each time you attach to a sewer line and simply leave the clear hose connector (Clear EZ 45 degree elbow) attached and inserted into the Newmar chute? or do you have a connector on the sewer connection end to which you attach the terminal sewer connector. I’ve been using the pre-assembled hoses. Perhaps I should assemble my own hose assembly. Could you send a picture of what you put into the chute?

      Hey Bruce. We leave the sewer end of the hose “naked” with nothing on it at all, and attach it to this coupler each time we hook up: http://amzn.to/2EmZats

      Takes only a few seconds and works like a charm for us. That allows us to slide the sewer end into the chute, with just enough room at the top for the door to close behind the clear elbow. We’ve been doing that way for 10 years and are very satisfied with it, but we know that any desire to use a pre-fab hose with any type of fitting already connected at the sewer end would prevent us from using the chute. Luckily, we’ve never used anything but a plain 20-foot hose (this one: http://amzn.to/2nPDZpF) and never had a reason to switch.

  5. As always guys, another wonderful video.
    As a side note, after we bought our current coach I realized that the sewer compartment had enough room in it to allow the sewer hose connected to the tank outlet all the time. I really, really like not having to attach the hose each time. However, I do a very good fresh water rinse on the tanks so the hose will be free of debris, and then I cap the dump station end.

      Thanks Nick. That sounds like a good use of that space. Our Newmar has a little trap door right next to the water compartment that looks exactly like a fuel filler door. It hides a cylindrical chute that the sewer hose slides into, which we really like. The only downside is that since it’s basically the exact same size as the hose, you could never leave any kind of sewer fitting attached to the end that goes in first. And there’s a limit to how large a sewer connector will fit at the top end, with our clear elbow JUST fitting enough to close the little door. It works okay for us, but we don’t think about what other types of fittings or set-up we might use if we kept the hose somewhere else, like in your case, since we’d hate to have that cool chute go to waste. lol

  6. Your video, on this subject, as usual, was very helpful. Question: Who could I contact about getting info. about my 07 DutchStar, about the electrical system? I contacted Newmar, two RV dealers somewhat close, and nothing. The dealer in Florida gave me next to no information, about anything. Thanks Bill Martin
