Is Neighbor.com The Way To Find Local RV Storage Options?

For many RVers, there comes a time when the need to store your rig arises. Whether you need to simply park it for a short time, store it to protect it from the elements for a season, or you run into an emergency situation while you’re traveling, finding local storage for your RV can be a real challenge. In this post, we’re looking at peer-to-peer storage service Neighbor.com as a possible answer to your RV storage needs.

What Is Neighbor.com RV Storage?

There are many reasons why an RV owner might have a need for local RV storage. You may live in an area known for rough weather during the seasons you’re not using your RV, so you need to protect it. You may live in a place where local laws or association rules limit your ability to store the rig on your own property (or you just don’t have space to do it, even if it’s allowed). Or you may be traveling and have an emergency that demands that you store your RV right where you are and hop on a plane to get to family quickly. (The latter has happened to us!)

Whatever the reason for your need for RV parking/storage, Neighbor.com may be a great way to locate exactly what you need. Neighbor.com is a peer-to-peer service that matches homeowners with RVers, boat owners, other vehicle owners, and people who have items they need to store (that’s right – you can even store your stuff!)

Boxes and bins stored in a spare room, attic, or basement of a home

In addition to indoor and outdoor storage for RVs and other vehicles, Neighbor.com offers storage for personal items in spare rooms of private homes.

Neighbor.com offers homeowners a way to advertise their available storage space and make a little money on the side. They can set their own price(s) for storing just about anything on their property… from vehicles (including RVs, boats, and other vehicles) to personal/household items you’d usually put in a storage facility or lot.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As we write this post, you can find listings in 48 states and the District of Columbia, but the service is doing so well that it’s in the process of extending to international markets, too.

What Kind of Storage Space Can You Rent on Neighbor.com?

You can find options for short-term/monthly parking, long-term parking, and even fleet parking using Neighbor.com. A homeowner can rent space on their private property. Rental spaces might include the following:

  • Driveway
  • Garage
  • Basement
  • Barn
  • Unpaved lot or open field
  • Attic
  • Storage shed
  • Spare room in the house
  • Unused closet or loft space

Neighbor.com offers the following types of storage all over the country:

  • Self-storage (items including boxes of belongings, furniture, bikes, kayaks, surfboards, ATVs, etc.)
  • RVs
  • Boats
  • Cars (including antique or specialty cars)
  • Trucks
  • Trailers

Neighbor.com’s CEO and co-founder Joseph Woodbury describes the service as working much as Airbnb does, only with vehicles or items instead of people.

What Is the Cost to Rent Storage Space Through Neighbor.com?

Again, the homeowner sets the price for whatever space they’re renting. However, the company does offer guidelines in an effort to keep prices reasonable. Generally, the cost to rent storage space for RVs, boats, vehicles, or stuff is less than what you’d pay at a commercial storage facility because homeowners have less overhead than commercial entities do.

Cost also depends on the size of the space you’re renting, the duration for which you’ll be renting it, and the location of the space (i.e. city, country, popular location near a major metropolitan area, etc.).

For RVs, for example, you can go to Neighbor.com’s search page for RV storage for and enter an address or zip code of the location where you’d like to store your rig. You’ll be asked to enter the class and the length of the RV/vehicle you want to store.

Once you enter those details, you’ll be shown all of the options in that particular area and the type of storage being offered (i.e. unpaved parking lot, covered storage, indoor storage, driveway, etc.), and the monthly fee will be shown. You’ll notice that prices are generally lower than in a comparable commercial storage space.

If you have a large empty lot available, you could conceivably earn some passive income storing RVs and/or other vehicles on your otherwise empty lot.

Note that you’ll also see one or more photos of the site/space being rented as well as other details you’ll need to know (such as whether accessibility involves stairs, when you can have access to the site/space, and whether you need to make an appointment to access your storage area). You’ll also find a text description of the site/space as well as any restrictions (such as “no living in the space” and/or “no working in the space”), as well as reviews from previous renters.

How Does Neighbor.com Protect Hosts & Renters?

Homeowners/hosts are allowed the opportunity to inspect anything they’re asked to store before accepting the vehicle or items for storage in their space. They have the right to reject the item or vehicle if they choose. For example, if someone wanted to store boxes of fireworks or chemical-laden fluids, the property owner could simply reject the items. The same would be true of a vehicle in very poor condition or leaking oil, etc.

In addition, Neighbor.com insures homeowners/hosts for up to $2 million in the event that someone is injured on their property or their home or property is damaged. They also offer the renter a certain amount of insurance on their item(s)/vehicle(s) in the event they’re damaged or stolen while stored.

Neighbor.com’s CEO notes that 1 in 5 commercial storage facilities is broken into annually. However, it’s harder to target private residential areas because it’s far less obvious that homeowners are storing items. Thieves are also often less likely to target private properties with homeowners on the premises than they are storage facilities that are mostly vacant.

If you need to park or store your RV and want to avoid the high costs associated with commercial storage facilities, you may be able to park your rig on private property where it will be safely tucked away until you return to retrieve it.

A Final Note About Neighbor.com RV Storage

Neighbor’s peer-to-peer storage service could be great for seasonal RV storage near your home… or short-term storage for when you’re traveling in your RV and need to store the rig while you have to be away (as we noted earlier in the article, we’ve had to do this kind of thing in the past as full-timers, when a family emergency arose).

Neighbor.com is also an opportunity for people with extra space to earn some passive income. For vehicle or RV storage, though, you’ll need to be sure local laws and any homeowner’s association rules don’t prohibit it on your property.

As with any peer-to-peer service, while the backend infrastructure of Neighbor.com is consistent, your experience with any individual “host” on the platform may vary (just like Airbnb itself is a great service, but not all hosts are created equal).

We've used this service several times. Unfortunately, there are also scammers. The exact address is only given after booking. This person had pictures from Google Maps, of the parking garage, and pictures from the hotel website. The parking garage description. The house number was right next door. So, 6505 to 6503. However, this spot was in an open field. Neighbor.com didn't want to help us. After intervening, they replaced the pictures.

Oh no, @Beat. It's such a shame that there are always people out there looking to ruin good things. Sorry to hear about your experience, but it's a good reminder to always be on alert.

It would be great to have this app work in Canada.
